Injured pony put down after theftfrom bbc news site
A three-year-old pony left trapped in a stolen horsebox had to be destroyed, police said.
Two ponies were taken from their field in Edworth Road, Langford, Bedfordshire late on Wednesday or early Thursday and were loaded into a stolen horsebox.
The wooden bottom of the trailer collapsed during the journey, badly injuring the three-year-old pony. The other escaped unhurt.
The pony's injuries were found to be so severe it had to be destroyed
Police said it was likely the horsebox had been towed through Dunton before being abandoned in Croydon in Cambridgeshire.
Pc Becky Wayland said: "The thieves have not only committed a crime by stealing the horses, they have callously just unhitched the trailer when the bottom collapsed and driven off, leaving one of the ponies trapped and in terrible pain."
She said she wanted to hear from anyone who was driving along the B1042 in the early hours of Thursday and may have seen the horsebox being towed.
